‘Wear a lifejacket, it never ruined a day on the water’ the strapline printed on the 450 Crewsaver Kite Lifejackets supplied to Transport NSW as part of a unique partnership formed to promote safer boating.
The Maritime Management Centre within Transport NSW has worked to deliver over the past 18 months the largest boating safety program the state of NSW has ever seen, and the supply of these new jackets will form part of the second phase of the “Wear a lifejacket” initiative, promoting the wearing of a lifejacket whenever on the water.
“Nine out of 10 people who drowned when boating in NSW over the past decade were not wearing a lifejacket. By remembering to wear a lifejacket at all times on the water, it might just save your life,” General Manager of the Maritime Management Centre Mr Howard Glenn said.
The Kite Lifejackets were chosen for their slim line, stylish design allowing them to fit comfortably on the wearer’s body and to encourage longer and more frequent use.
“Thankfully, modern lifejackets are designed to help you get the most out of your day on the water. They are stylish and available in all shapes and sizes. Because they are less cumbersome to wear than the old-style block of foam jackets, they can be worn in comfort for the duration of a typical day out in a small boat,” Mr Glenn said.
“We are delighted to have been chosen as key supplier for this exciting partnership”, says Crewsaver Australia National Sector Manager-Marine, Craig Johnson. “The programme encapsulates everything Crewsaver is about, promoting safety on the water wherever possible.”
The partnership between the Maritime Management Centre and the Survitec Group supports a priority action within the Maritime Policy Agenda which is committed to reducing the rate of fatalities through the promotion of safe, responsible and enjoyable boating.
“This initiative is part of a wider collaboration with safety partners to develop a program that improves the wear rates of lifejackets and reduce the loss of life caused by drowning when boating,” Mr Glenn said.
“Nearly two million people in NSW go boating each year, and accidents happen suddenly, and to anyone. This partnership is about educating people about the benefits of normalising the wearing of lifejackets.”
